Budapest Christmas markets 2026: Advent Basilica and Vörösmarty Square dates, opening hours and day-trip ideas with a rental car from Budapest Airport.
Budapest's two big Christmas markets open on 13 November 2026: the Advent Basilica on St Stephen's Square (Szent István tér) runs until 1 January 2027, and the Vörösmarty Square market runs until New Year's Eve. Both are a short walk from Deák Ferenc tér, where the M1, M2 and M3 metro lines meet.
You do not need a car between the two squares — walk or take the metro. A car pays off for the days around it: an evening in Szentendre, a day in Eger, or a run to the markets in Vienna and Bratislava.

Parking near the markets
The city centre is busy in December and street parking is paid. Park at your hotel or in a garage outside the inner ring and go in by metro or tram — it is quicker than circling around St Stephen's Square.
Day trips by car in the Christmas season
- Szentendre — about 23 km from central Budapest along the Danube; small Advent streets and museums.
- Vienna — the Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt opens on the same day, 13 November.
- Bratislava — the main market on Hlavné námestie opens on 26 November.

Mulled wine and driving
Hungary has zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel. If you plan to taste mulled wine (forralt bor), choose a designated driver who drinks nothing, or leave the car at the hotel that evening.

Can I pick up the rental car at Budapest Airport?
