Vienna's Christkindlmarkt runs 13 Nov – 26 Dec 2026. Plan a day trip from Budapest by rental car: route, parking, cross-border rules and tips.
The Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, in front of Vienna City Hall, runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, daily 10:00–22:00 (24 December until 18:30). The Eistraum ice rink next to it stays open until 6 January 2027.
From Budapest it is a motorway drive of about 250 km via the M1 and A4 — roughly 3 hours without traffic, more on December weekends. Start early, or stay a night and make it two days.

Driving to Vienna
Taking the car abroad requires our prior written approval. Tell us when you book. The Hungarian motorway vignette is included; for Austria/Slovakia you need to buy that country's vignette yourself (e.g. online before crossing the border).
Vienna has paid short-stay parking zones across the city. The easiest option is a Park & Ride garage at a U-Bahn station and the U2 or U3 to Rathaus / Volkstheater.
Make it two capitals
Bratislava is about an hour from Vienna. Its main Christmas market opens on 26 November, so from late November you can see both in one trip — the loop Budapest–Bratislava–Vienna–Budapest fits in a 3-day rental.
Punsch, Glühwein and the drive back
Punsch and Glühwein are part of the market. Whoever drives back to Budapest should not drink — Hungary has zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel. Choose a designated driver before you set off.
