Day Trips from Budapest
How to Choose Your Rental Car and Rental Days at Budapest Airport
Pick the right car and the right number of rental days at Budapest Airport (BUD): 200 km per day adds up over the rental, price per car, Vienna, Bratislava and Lake Balaton distances.

Two decisions shape what a rental costs at Budapest Airport (BUD): which car you take, and for how many days. At Trade Rent the price is per car, never per person. Each rental day includes 200 km, and the Hungarian motorway vignette is included. All five cars in the fleet are automatic.
This guide walks through both choices in the order that matters, so the car and the days match the trip you are actually making — Vienna, Lake Balaton or anywhere else.
Step 1: Count travellers and luggage, not seats
Start with who is travelling and what they carry. That decides the size of the car. The fleet:
- Škoda Octavia Combi — estate with a big boot, for two to four travellers with luggage.
- Nissan Juke — compact crossover for two travellers, city and shorter trips.
- Kia Sportage — SUV for a family or a longer touring route.
- Tesla Model 3 — if you would rather drive electric.
- Mercedes V-Class — 7–8 seats, when the whole group travels in one vehicle.
The price is per car, so four people in one car pay the same as one driver in that car.

Step 2: Work out the kilometres your trip needs
Each rental day includes 200 km, and the allowance adds up over the whole rental: 2 days = 400 km, 3 days = 600 km, to use however you like across the days. A long drive on day one and a quiet day at the destination is fine, as long as the total fits.
Typical round trips from Budapest Airport (OSRM, no traffic):
- Lake Balaton (Siófok) — about 274 km → 2 days (400 km).
- Bratislava — about 466 km → 3 days (600 km).
- Vienna — about 554 km → 3 days (600 km).
Read these as a starting point: driving around the destination adds kilometres on top.
Step 3: Extra kilometres or an extra day?
When your plan sits just above the allowance, you have two options:
- Pay for the extra kilometres — HUF 100 per km above the total allowance.
- Add a rental day — 24 more hours with the car and another 200 km in the allowance.
If you need more time, add the day. If you only need a little more distance, the extra kilometres are the simpler answer. What to avoid is booking too few days for a long route and finding the difference at the end of the rental.
Step 4: Book online
Book online at traderent.hu/en: choose the car and the dates, and you see the price for the rental before you fly. Pickup at Budapest Airport costs a HUF 5,000 surcharge, added at booking.
Step 5: Driving abroad
Taking the car abroad requires our prior written approval — tell us your route when you book. Austria and Slovakia are among the countries we can approve. Only the Hungarian motorway vignette is included; for Austria or Slovakia you buy that country's vignette yourself (e.g. online before crossing the border).
FAQ
Is the price per person or per car?
Per car. Four people in one car pay the same as one driver.
What if I drive more than 200 km in a day?
Nothing, as long as the total fits: the 200 km per day adds up over the whole rental (3 days = 600 km). Above the total, extra km cost HUF 100 per km — or add a rental day for another 200 km.
Do I have to ask for an automatic car?
No. All five cars in the fleet are automatic.
Do I need to buy a motorway vignette in Hungary?
No, the Hungarian motorway vignette is included. Foreign vignettes (e.g. Austria, Slovakia) you buy yourself.
What about the deposit and insurance?
Deposit by car: Skoda Octavia Combi 2.0 TDI: HUF 250,000; Nissan Juke Tekna: HUF 200,000; Kia Sportage Gold: HUF 250,000; Tesla Model 3 Long Range: HUF 400,000; Mercedes-Benz V-Class XL: HUF 500,000. Third-party liability insurance (MTPL) is included in the rate; the renter pays for damage they cause, and the deposit secures this but does not cap your liability (terms §5).
What does a car cost per day?
Nissan Juke from HUF 24,900 / day, Škoda Octavia from HUF 26,900 / day, Kia Sportage from HUF 29,500 / day. Airport pickup costs a HUF 5,000 surcharge.
